East Millinocket, Maine — Home Grown Fuels Inc. (HGF) is pleased to announce it has leased storage and light manufacturing space in the iconic Great Northern Paper Mill in East
Millinocket, Maine. The facility will focus on producing innovative and eco-friendly products, including biocarbon and biographene, contributing to the renewable manufacturing landscape
and offering new economic opportunities to the region.
HGF is excited to locate at the former paper mill, a site renowned for its pivotal role in Maine’s industrial heritage. HGF bridges the past and future by repurposing this historic location, bringing sustainable, advanced material manufacturing to the local community. Current infrastructure is being upgraded, which will allow HGF to grow and bring clean and green technologies to the mill site. The new facility will focus on creating biocarbon and biographene— two powerful materials that hold vast potential across industries and are made from locally sourced wood chips. Biocarbon is a renewable, high-carbon product often used in water and soil filtration. The primary market for HGF’s biocarbon is PFAS remediation from soil and HGF has started working on Maine dairy farms.
Biographene has applications in construction, 3D printing, and advanced materials made from waste materials. With support from the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composite Center, HGF is developing a filament to be used in advanced manufacturing applications.
“This new site offers more than just a production space; it represents our commitment to fostering sustainable development and creating jobs in a way that honors Maine’s industrial roots,” said Lee Khan, CEO of Home Grown Fuels Inc. “We’re excited to contribute to the revitalization of the East Millinocket area and to bring cutting-edge green technology manufacturing to a community that understands the value of innovation and resilience.” The East Millinocket facility, when fully operational, will create 11 new jobs, with plans to expand as production ramps up. The company is committed to hiring locally and will work with the Katahdin Higher Education Center to develop the HGF workforce.
The production of biocarbon and biographene represents a substantial step forward in renewable technologies, addressing the demand for sustainable materials. HGF remains committed to lowering carbon footprints and advancing environmental initiatives through green manufacturing processes, underscoring its mission to deliver products that not only serve industry but also support a healthier planet.
